John's story

John Whittal, Audit Director, based in our Wellington office.

I’ve been in New Zealand with my family for over three years now. Obviously we miss family and friends. Fortunately technology like Skype and Facebook allows you to stay in touch with loved ones. The first few weeks in New Zealand were especially difficult while we waited on our furniture and pets to arrive, we received good support during this time, which made us feel welcome and the process much easier. My children were five and seven on arrival in New Zealand, and they have adapted wonderfully to the change and settled almost immediately. New Zealand is now our home and we feel blessed to be here.

John WhittalNew Zealand is a small, beautiful country, with some of the most amazing natural scenery in the world, and has vast open spaces whenever you leave the city. This is one of best things about being in New Zealand, with weekends spent exploring the forests or out on the water. The other best part of living here is the feeling of safety and being able to fully relax, whether enjoying a backyard braai or out and about.

I came from a public sector audit backround, having spent over 15 years at the Auditor General South Africa. The audits here are performed against the same auditing standards (International Standards on Auditing) and on the same software (TeamMate) making the transition easier. The big differences being the opinion includes the performance information and also that the New Zealand public sector is at the forefront of financial reporting, which is great for making the most of your experience and training.
