Nicole Cooper, Intermediate Auditor

I've just finished my first year at Audit New Zealand and I feel a real sense of pride and accomplishment having done it. I now feel comfortable and that I can talk to my clients I can understand what their business does and what they're doing and what auditing actually is all about.

I also started my CA this year which was something I'd been wanting to do since before uni, so actually starting and doing it and sitting my first exam – I feel like I'm on my path and my career's sort of I'm going to where I've always wanted to be.

From your very first day you're thrown right into it and you're on site in your first week. I've learnt so much from when I first started as a grad right through to the end of the busy season – the amount you learn is insane. It's applying what you learnt in uni and actually applying the practical parts to it.

I really like the team environment. So the directors and the managers are all really friendly. My supervisors and my mentors are really my go-to people and they're not scary. There's a real sense of they're there to guide you and support you, and they just want you to learn, which has been really supportive and something I didn't expect.

So outside of your year group you get your buddy and they're generally on all your clients and all your audits with them so they're your first point of contact when you don't know anything or you've got questions.

Then you've got your mentor who’s generally a manager or assistant manager level who's there to help guide you in your professional career development. You have regular meetings with them and they really talk you through about your goals and your performance and where you want to get better and where you want to improve and how to do that. They put in steps in place to make it possible.

I'm ready to take on a buddy going into my second year so I can teach what I've learnt as a grad and pass it on.

After my first year at Audit New Zealand I can say that I've learnt so much more than I ever thought I could. I feel like a sense of accomplishment in all that I've done. I've worked really hard and I've gained the benefits at the end of the year and I just think it's a really good learning and training environment. It's supportive and it's a great place to be.
