Ben Halford (Audit Director):

I started at Audit New Zealand on the 15th of November 1982. I joined straight from the University of Otago in Dunedin and I’ve now been with the organisation for 33 years. I was always interested in accounting as a profession and I remember at the time that there was a flyer out about the Audit Office, Audit New Zealand was called the Audit Office in those days, and it was quite an attractive place to work. [Audit Office recruitment poster from the 1980s featuring Ben.] I went along to see them and I found that the people at the Audit Office were very helpful and they talked about what they were doing for the public sector.

A lot of people have asked me over the years why have I stayed so long in this organisation, 33 years is a long period of time in someone’s career. But I think that the thing that really appeals to me is that the – it’s the people I’ve worked with over those years. One of the things I particularly like about working in Tauranga is the opportunity to develop people who are coming through and who are starting out in their careers. You’ve developed them from an accounting point of view, you’ve developed their skills, and they’ve gone on to either manager roles or director roles within our own organisation or gone into other careers in the accounting profession.
