Paul Helm has a passion for strategic financial management and lifting the capability of finance teams across the public sector. He has held his current role – Head of Government Finance Profession and Chief Government Accountant – since October 2014. In this role, he is focused on skills development in strategic financial management across the public service and helping finance teams achieve their potential. Paul is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand, CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales. |

Martin joined Audit NZ in 2007. He has particular interests in procurement, asset management, project management, and being a real time probity auditor. A Chartered Surveyor by profession, before joining the Audit Commission and Audit New Zealand Martin spent 10 years working on mapping and civil engineering projects across the UK. He is one of the authors of our recent Asset Management and Long-Term planning report. |

Brett has been an Associate Director since May 2015. He began his career as a Graduate in 2003 and joined our Accounting Technical Team in 2006. Brett is an Associate Director in our Professional Practices Group, which is charged with enhancing our organisation’s professional competence. His responsibilities include providing accounting technical advice to our auditors on challenging accounting issues and advising the Financial Statements of the Government audit team on technical matters. Brett is also the principal author of Audit New Zealand’s Model Financial Statements |
| Shaping the future Martin Matthews Controller and Auditor-General |
Martin Matthews began his seven-year term as New Zealand’s Controller and Auditor-General on 1 February 2017. He has worked in the public service for more than 36 years. Martin joined the (then) Audit Office in 1979 and spent the first 18 years of his career in the office. He was an Assistant Auditor-General from 1990 to 1998, holding various portfolios during this period. Martin then spent 10 years as Chief Executive of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. He later served as Secretary for Transport and Chief Executive of the Ministry of Transport, from 2008 to June 2016. Martin is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, New Zealand Institute of Management, New Zealand Institute of Chartered Logistics and Transport, and Companion of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Engineers. |

Better public services 2 and delivering the Auckland NZ needs Lewis Holden, Deputy Commissioner for Auckland, State Services Commission |
Lewis was appointed Deputy Commissioner Auckland in March 2015 after being the Chief Executive of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage from June 2009. Prior to this Lewis spent eight years in senior roles at the Ministry of Economic Development' including as Head of Economic Strategy and Deputy Secretary of the Ministry's Industry and Regional Development Branch. |

It was particularly appropriate to have John present as 7 to 14 May is Privacy week. John was appointed to the independent statutory position of Privacy Commissioner in February 2014 for a term of five years. He provides independent comment on significant personal information policies and issues. Prior to his appointment, John practiced law in Wellington for over 20 years specialising in information law while representing a wide range of public and private sector clients. |

Paul O'Neil joined the Serious Fraud Office as General Counsel in December 2016. Prior to this appointment, he was the Head of Enforcement at the Financial Markets Authority responsible for overseeing conduct of the FMA's civil and criminal proceedings. Paul holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Auckland. |
